Additional Info: “Majestic Vista” featuring the Kate Shelley Bridge was introduced at the Chicago Northwestern Historical Society meeting May 20th, 2000.  The bridge is 2680 feet long, 185 feet high, it was built in 1900 and spans the beautiful Des Moines River Valley.   This proud lady becomes a centurion this year and she has served faithfully for 100 years.  The
legend of this bridge is one of Iowa's historical gems.  Kate Shelley was a young girl living near Moingoua, Iowa.  During a storm, the former bridge was taken out by the swollen Honey Creek.  She heard a steam locomotive crash into the flood waters, knowing that a passenger train was soon to follow, she braved the storm, took a lantern, and crawled over the bridge on her hands and needs.  She reached the Moingoua depot and alerted the station master of the disaster at Honey Creek.  A terrible disaster was averted.  This bridge was named in her honor, and is the perfect setting for the green and
gold CNW mixed freight.
